SAN FRANCISCO — A city resident who lost his brother, son, and wife in a series of tragic incidents has been sentenced to federal prison for 41 months, despite having been acquitted in January of possessing the bullet that killed his wife, court records show. The story of 44-year-old Omar Pope dates back to last year, when federal prosecutors charged him with two felony counts: being a felon in possession of a loaded gun in May 2022, and possessing the bullet that killed his wife in December 2021, as the couple struggled over a pistol inside their home.Pope made the unusual move of pleading guilty to the May possession charge and taking the second count to trial. Last January, a jury acquitted him of being a felon in possession of ammunition, but that left Pope still facing a federal prison term for the gun case.On Thursday, U.S. District Judge William Alsup sentenced Pope to 41 months in federal prison, with credit for time he spent in jail since his June 2022 arrest.According...

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Tom Kim would do anything to save a golf stroke. Especially at a major. And he’s got the mud-caked pants and shirt to prove it.Kim went all in — waist deep into the muck of a marshy area along Oak Hill’s Allens Creek — in a bid to retrieve his ball following an errant tee shot off No. 6 during the opening round of the PGA Championship on Thursday. He emerged without the ball, his shirt and pants covered in mud, while also not realizing he had instantly become a viral sensation on social media with much of his ordeal broadcast on television.“Are you kidding me?” Kim said, pulling down his white cap to hide his face upon leaving the scorer’s tent, where he was informed his dip into the mud went world wide. “Unbelievable. All for a ball.”Kim then sunk to his knees and began to laugh upon being handed a cell phone to see video for the first time.Embarrassed as the 20-year-old from South Korea was, Kim was adamant he would do it again on a day he finished 3-over 73,...

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — Ryan Fox headed to Oak Hill at 5:30 a.m. to get breakfast before getting stretched in preparation for the opening round of the PGA Championship.Just his bad luck, Fox was already at the course when he received a text that the start was delayed by frost, pushing his tee time back nearly two hours. But that’s the way it has gone lately for the Kiwi.He felt sick on the weekend at the Masters, tried to play at Hilton Head and withdrew after three holes to go home. Turns out he had pneumonia, which kept him home for two weeks trying to recover.“As soon as I got over that, our daughter was born, which was just over two weeks ago now,” Fox said. “So I had a few sleepless nights and not a lot of practice.”It doesn’t stop there. One day he tried to practice, Auckland, New Zealand, flooded for the third time this year. Utah kids’ book author accused in husband’s death changed life insurance policies, prosecutors say

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah woman who wrote a children’s book about grief after her husband’s death and was later arrested for killing him had made changes to her husband’s life insurance years before when she is accused of fatally poisoning him, according to charging documents updated Thursday. The additional allegations, which were previously mentioned in search warrants but not the charging documents, led to the postponement of a detention hearing scheduled for Friday that would have been the first time Kouri Richins was in court since her case became the latest true crime sensation earlier this month. The hearing has been rescheduled for June 12. Prosecutors say Kouri Richins, 33, poisoned her husband, Eric Richins, 39, by slipping five times the lethal dose of fentanyl into a cocktail she made for him in March 2022. The mother of three later self-published a children’s book titled “Are You with Me?” about an angel wing-clad deceased father watching over his sons. She prom...

Twitter accuses Microsoft of misusing its data, foreshadowing a possible fight over AI

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 08:31:56 GMT

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A lawyer for Twitter owner Elon Musk accused Microsoft of misusing the service’s data and demanded an audit from the software giant. The letter primarily addresses a seemingly narrow set of alleged infractions by Microsoft in drawing information from Twitter’s database of tweets. But the move could foreshadow more serious developments. Musk has previously accused Microsoft and its partner OpenAI in a tweet of “illegally” using Twitter data to develop sophisticated AI systems such as ChatGPT. “ Lawsuit time,” Musk wrote in that April tweet. But the letter, signed by Musk lawyer Alex Spiro, tiptoed around that concern. It noted that Microsoft’s agreement with Twitter barred it from overuse of the service’s data such as exceeding “reasonable request volume” or “excessive or abusive usage.” Spiro then noted that “despite these limitations,” Microsoft had retrieved more than 26 billion tweets in 2022 alone. He provided no context for those numbers. T...

DeChambeau resurfaces at Oak Hill and leads PGA Championship

PITTSFORD, N.Y. (AP) — So much talk about this PGA Championship has been the restoration project of Oak Hill. Equally astonishing Thursday is the restoration of Bryson DeChambeau. That incredible bulk who won the U.S. Open at Winged Foot in 2020? DeChambeau has shed some 40 pounds by cutting out food to which he was allergic.“I took a Zoomer peptide test, which essentially tells you what inflames your blood when you eat it,” he said. “Pretty much everything I liked, I couldn’t eat.”The guy who tried to smash it as far as he could and have wedges into the green? Now he’s happier finding fairways, and he was happy to share what led to the improved accuracy.“It’s being more … how do I explain this easy? I’m just in a place where I’m more ulnar,” he said, leaving everyone to wonder what would have been the more complicated explanation. The place that matters is his name high on the leaderboard. DeChambeau still lashed away with speed and strength, off t...
