By Olivia Wynkoop | Bay City NewsSan Francisco supervisors approved a resolution on Tuesday urging park officials to rename Golden Gate Park’s Stow Lake to a name that reflects the city’s “values of celebrating diversity.”The lake was named for former California State Assembly Speaker William Stow when it was created in 1893. Stow had been assembly speaker in 1855 and after leaving office was appointed to the San Francisco Park Commission in 1889.RELATED: With George Berkeley’s slave-owner past uncovered, will the city or university consider a name change?During his time as speaker, Stow proposed a tax on Jews and publicly embraced antisemitic rhetoric, such as wishing he had the power to eliminate Jewish people from California, according to the resolution. The resolution asks the Recreation and Park Commission to rename the lake, its boathouse and the drive circling Strawberry Hill that are named after Stow.Related ArticlesCalifornia Politics | Black Californi...Kurtenbach: There’s only one thing to do with Klay Thompson, Draymond Green

If we learned one thing from this disappointing Warriors’ season, it’s that this team has only one timeline: Steph Curry’s.Despite plenty of wishful thinking, there will not be a smooth, easy transition to a new, young, winning core. No, the Warriors will go as far as Curry can take them in the years to come. And Curry should have the other two members of the team’s title core — Klay Thompson and Draymond Green — along for the ride. While Curry has sounded like he wants to be basketball’s Tom Brady — playing until heaven knows when — he has three seasons remaining on his current contract with the Warriors. That’s a long time in the ever-changing NBA, but it’s a perfect runway for the Dubs’ troika, of which the mortal two showed their age this past season. If the Warriors’ top priority this offseason should be to re-sign president of basketball operations Bob Myers, the next thing they should do is sign Green and Thompson to extensions that line up with Curry’s contract. The Warriors aren...Four things the Athletics can carry with them after significant win over Arizona

OAKLAND — Athletics manager Mark Kotsay was bleary-eyed as he attempted to sort through a 9-8 win Tuesday night over the Arizona Diamondbacks in 12 innings. It almost took questions from the assembled media to remind him exactly of what had just transpired.“I’m exhausted,” Kotsay said. “As I’m sure all of you are.”By the time the game ended after four hours and nine minutes, probably less than a third of the paid attendance of 3,261 were still there and many of them were howling like wolves for the duration of extra innings.Seriously.It ended when rookie Estuery Ruiz singled off the glove of Arizona shortstop Nick Ahmed with the bases loaded, driving in the winning run in the 12th inning. With the Athletics 24 games under .500 at 10-34, no single win is going to vault them into relevance. Which doesn’t mean there wasn’t some good stuff worth reviewing in what could be one of their most memorable wins of a forgettable season. Here ar...NCS softball playoffs: Top-notch pitching takes Antioch, Alameda to quarterfinals

By Deena Shanker | BloombergPublic health advocates have long lauded Michelle Obama for her efforts to make American food healthier — especially for kids. From her perch in the White House, she led efforts to update school nutrition standards, modernize labelling on packaged foods, persuade kids to eat more fruits and vegetables, and increase their consumption of water. She even encouraged the food industry to curb the marketing of unhealthy products to children. Now a co-founder and strategic partner at Plezi Nutrition, a maker of sweetened beverages for kids ages 6 and up, Obama says she’s offering a lower-sugar alternative to steer them away from sugary drinks. The overconsumption of such beverages among children can lead to higher risks for maladies including heart disease, diabetes, tooth decay, obesity and headaches. As soon as “most kids get to school age, drinking only water and milk just isn’t a reality,” Obama said at a Wall Street Journal conference earlier this month. “We’...Families of men shot by California cops lose faith in new accountability law as reviews drag on

TEHACHAPI – Three men in dark suits knocked on Pam Holland’s door one night last June. They told her that her son was dead, shot to death in a neighboring county by a sheriff’s deputy. The shooting, they said, was being investigated under a new California law that requires the state Justice Department step in when a police officer kills an unarmed person.Pam Holland hoped the investigation would be quick and fair. Her father had been a Kern County Sheriff’s reserve deputy. She grew up around cops. She thought she could trust them — but she also believed that police agencies protect their own.“I was like, wow, that’s awesome, this is great, they’re going to take it out of the hands of the local cops, who would instantly feel anger toward my son without even knowing anything,” she said. But an investigation that the Justice Department officers told Holland would take eight months is quickly approaching 12. Now, she is among several Californians whose family members were killed by the p...50% of those killed in DMV car crashes were unbuckled
