Results have been OK

OAKLAND, Calif. — Heading into their series finale at Oakland Coliseum on Sunday afternoon, the Twins had 107 pinch-hit plate appearances, second to Detroit’s 110. Their 99 at-bats led baseball, and were just five fewer than last year’s total of 104.Twins pinch-hitters have provided some big moments this season, but overall it’s been, by MLB standards, a middling performance.“We’d probably like to get better results out of it, but we’re just trying to get the guys up there that match up best at certain points of the game,” manager Rocc Baldelli said. “I wouldn’t call it great, but I think it’s something that makes sense and we’re going to keep doing it.”Joey Gallo and Edouard Julien have two of the Twins three pinch-hit home runs this season, both of them game-winners, and Julien hit a go-ahead double in Friday’s 5-4 victory over Oakland.Julien is 2 for 8 as a pinch hitter this season but that’s six total bases and two go-ahead RBIs — not bad for a guy that had never done it before ...Wild sign winger Brandon Duhaime to 1-year, $1.1 million contract

After filing for salary arbitration last week, winger Brandon Duhaime agreed to a 1-year, $1.1 million contract with the Wild on Sunday. This was the expected outcome despite the fact that the 26-year-old Duhaime filed for salary arbitration. Most players leaguewide come to a resolution with their respective team before an independent arbitrator has to get involved. The structure of the new deal means Duhaime will be an unrestricted free agent next summer. He’s coming off the best performance of his career last season during which he posted 10 points (1 goal, 9 assists) across 51 games.Though he’s likely to fill a role in the bottom half of the lineup next season, Duhaime is a candidate to move up into the top of the lineup. He might be the fastest player on the Wild roster and he’s equipped with a sneaky good shot.It has been an offseason predicated on patience for Wild general manager Bill Guerin. He’s still waiting on the top priority of figuring out a deal with goaltender Filip Gu...Juvenile in custody for St. Louis County murder

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — A poor start left Carlos Alcaraz a single point from a two-set hole against Novak Djokovic in the Wimbledon final. That sort of deficit is daunting for anyone, let alone a 20-year-old in his second major final, and against anyone, let alone Djokovic, someone who hadn't lost at Centre Court in a decade, someone seeking a fifth consecutive championship, and record-tying eighth overall, at the All England Club. Someone who won the year's first two Grand Slam tournaments and 23 over his career.Ah, but Alcaraz, last year's U.S. Open champ, wanted this shot at Djokovic, someone he called "a legend of our sport." Said it would make winning Wimbledon that much more special. And so Alcaraz managed to come through in that tiebreaker as choruses of “Car-los! Car-los!” from the stands competed with cries of his older, more experienced, more accomplished foe's two-syllable nickname, "No-le! No-le!” And then Alcaraz came through in a 32-point, 25-minute masterpiece of a g...Danny Jansen hits 3-run double as Blue Jays complete sweep, beat Diamondbacks 7-5

The results of a new survey indicate nearly 1 in 5 U.S. workers experience working under “toxic” conditions, with 22% of workers saying it has negatively affected their mental health. These concerning numbers come from the 2023 Work in America Survey from the American Psychological Association.“The number of individuals who report experiencing a toxic workplace without protection from harm is troubling,” Arthur C. Evans Jr., Ph.D., APA’s chief executive officer, said in a release. “No one should feel fear at work. It is clear there is much work to be done to foster a positive work environment for all workers in the nation.”The mental health implications are severe, according to the study. Those who reported a toxic work environment were three times more likely to experience mental health harm when compared to those who reported a healthy workplace. But mental health isn’t the only casualty of a toxic workplace.
