Opinion: Valley Water project protects Milpitas residents, businesses from flooding Valley Water was set to host a ribbon cutting June 20 to celebrate the completion of the Lower Penitencia Creek Improvements Project in Milpitas, one of many projects we are working on to help protect residents and businesses from flooding. With the completion of this project, we can continue providing flood protection for residents and businesses along a one-mile stretch of Lower Penitencia Creek. Our agency built a new levee and floodwalls and raised an existing levee along the creek from its confluence with Coyote Creek to San Andreas Drive in Milpitas. Although Valley Water completed some flood improvements in the existing channel in the 1980s, we needed to increase the creek’s capacity to carry water. During the rainy season, water flows from Berryessa Creek into Lower Penitencia Creek. Valley Water is currently working on flood improvements along Berryessa Creek, resulting in greater storm flows in Lower Penitencia Creek. To minimize the impacts on neighboring properties, our age...

Saratoga residents add to city’s network of license plate readers to help fight crime In the affluent, family-oriented city of Saratoga, crime rates sit well below the regional average, yet residential burglaries have been a top concern for residents and officials.A group of residents in Saratoga Woods, a neighborhood in the northeastern end of the city that sits above Highway 85, took matters into their own hands and invested in license plate reader cameras to deter criminals from entering their neighborhood in the first place. These cameras, which help law enforcement identify stolen vehicles or cars associated with crimes, are already in Bay Area communities like Los Gatos, Fremont, Alameda, San Jose and Los Altos Hills. Now, Saratoga neighborhoods are expanding the cameras’ coverage area by splitting the costs with their neighbors and sharing the data with local law enforcement. In 2022, the city installed seven Flock cameras on major roadways as part of a two-year, $20,000 pilot program. Residents of surrounding neighborhoods are able to add their camerasR...

Opinion: Saratoga mayor offers safety tips for summer As we embrace the summer season and enjoy the sunny days in Saratoga, I wanted to take a moment to share some important tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe. Saratoga has remained one of the safest cities in California, thanks to the vigilance and collaboration of our residents, the sheriff’s office and the city. Safety is our top priority, and by staying informed and taking a few simple precautions, we can have a summer filled with fun, laughter and peace of mind.If you haven’t already, I encourage you to get involved with your Neighborhood Watch group or establish a group in your neighborhood. Neighborhood Watch encourages us to connect with our neighbors, become familiar with our surroundings and look out for each other. By spotting and reporting any suspicious activities to 911, we can provide law enforcement with vital information that may prevent a crime or lead to an arrest.Consider installing a monitored alarm system that directly alerts the sheriff’s office ...
