Hot Property: Have the whole thing in Woods Hole

There’s a glittering contemporary home perched on nearly two acres at 77 Fay Road in Woods Hole that stands apart from the traditional coastal architecture — in the most spectacular way.Built in 2000, the seaside retreat sits right on Vineyard Sound and calls on elements of mid-century modern architecture — sloped ceilings, clerestory windows, walls of glass, and warm wood paneling.Clean lines, design simplicity, and Shoji-like accents recall a Japanese sensibility. The result is a home that feels peaceful and serves as a natural extension of its surroundings. And yes, there are water views for days, plus a private beach and jetty for the ultimate summer headquarters.A wall of floor-to-ceiling windows, modern corner fireplace, and tall ceilings make for a dramatic great room. Opening to both the elegant and functional kitchen space and a window-wrapped sunroom, this corner of the sprawling 6,780 square-foot home is naturally stylish and unfussy, just what you’d want in a beach house...Photos: Wind and rain pound South Florida, major flooding closes roads, airport

(KTXL) -- The California State Capitol building in downtown Sacramento was temporarily evacuated Thursday morning due to a 'credible threat,' according to an internal letter sent to state senators and their staffers. The exact nature of the threat has not been announced, but a little more than an hour after the initial evacuation, legislators and their staffers were able to enter the building once again around 10 a.m.“The California Highway Patrol has notified the Senate of a threat they consider to be credible involving the Capitol,” says a letter that was sent to state senators and senate staff. During the evacuation, legislators and staff were asked to remain home and work remotely. Senators and staffers already at the Capitol were asked to remain in place. What we know about the shooting at Mahany Park in Roseville "CHP and security partners are present in higher numbers in the Capitol area, and are alert of the situation," the letter said. SAN DIEGO (Border Report) -- About 150 migrants from countries such as Somalia, India, and Pakistan have been gathering on U.S. soil between two border barriers about a mile and a half west of the San Ysidro Port of Entry. Noor, a migrant from Somalia, said he and fellow migrants had been there for five days, some longer."We have no water, no food, it's cold, but where is the humanitarian help," he said.Migrants from Somalia, India, Pakistan and other countries wait on U.S. the side of the border as agents get the migrants to line up. NEW YORK (AP) — Wall Street is gaining ground Thursday following the latest sign that inflation continues to cool. The S&P 500 was 1.3% higher in afternoon trading after a report showed inflation at the wholesale level slowed last month by more than expected. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 340 points, or 1%, at 33,986, as of 2:27 p.m. Eastern time, while the Nasdaq composite was 2% higher.Thursday’s report showed that prices paid to producers last month were 2.7% higher than a year earlier, the lowest inflation level there in more than two years. The hope on Wall Street is that easier inflation on the wholesale level will not only support profits for companies but also flow through to cooler inflation for consumers. A day earlier, a separate report said inflation for consumers slowed to 5%. Inflation and how high the Federal Reserve will hike interest rates to tame it have been at the center of Wall Street’s struggles for more than a year. The Fed has hiked rates at such...Dairy farm explosion injures 1 person kills 18,000 cattle

DIMMITT, Texas (AP) — An explosion at a dairy farm in the Texas Panhandle that critically injured one person and killed an estimated 18,000 head of cattle was the deadliest barn fire recorded since the Animal Welfare Institute began tracking the fires.Castro County Sheriff Salvador Rivera has said the Monday fire and explosion at Southfork Dairy Farm near Dimmitt was likely due to overheated equipment and would be investigated by state fire marshals.“This would be the most deadly fire involving cattle in the past decade, since we started tracking that in 2013,” institute spokesperson Marjorie Fishman said Thursday. The institute also tracks barn fires that kill other livestock, including poultry, pigs, goats and sheep.“The deadliest barn fire overall since we began tracking in 2013… was a fire… at Hi-Grade Egg Producers North, Manchester, Indiana, which killed 1 million chickens,” according to Fishman.A 2022 report by the institute noted “several instances in which 100,00...71 units severely damaged in major Vaughan fire: deputy chief

BANGOR, Maine (AP) — Four Native Americans who say they were abused by three Roman Catholic priests on their reservation in Maine are the latest to bring lawsuits since the state fully lifted the statute of limitations for child sex crimes. The Penobscot Nation members contend the abuse started when they were 7 to 16 years old at St. Ann Parish on Indian Island, just north of Bangor. The oldest abuse dates to 1972, while the most recent happened in 1987, according to the lawsuits.Michael Bigos, a lawyer representing the members, filed the lawsuits in Penobscot County Superior Court, despite potential legal roadblocks by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland. More than two dozen lawsuits brought by Bigos’ law firm are currently on hold while the diocese challenges the 2021 law that repealed the statute of limitations.“Let us find out what the diocese knew and when they knew it, so they can be held fully accountable, and we can keep our communities safe for survivors,” Bigos told repo...UN, others cite new displacement from Ethiopia’s Tigray

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Forces from Ethiopia’s Amhara region have displaced tens of thousands of ethnic Tigrayans from disputed territory in the north of the country in recent weeks despite a peace deal agreed late last year, according to aid workers and internal agency documents seen by the AP.The Mai Tsebri area in northwestern Tigray is close to the regional border with Amhara. It changed hands several times during the war, which erupted in 2020 and ended with a ceasefire in November. The Amhara people claim the area as their own.Since early March, some 47,000 people uprooted from Mai Tsebri have gone to Endabaguna, a town roughly 55 kilometers (34 miles) further north, according to United Nations figures seen by the AP on Thursday.Another report, prepared by a humanitarian agency, says residents fled Mai Tsebri because of “harassment, ethnic profiling and direct threats” from irregular Amhara forces that also carried out “evictions.”That report adds that there have been no ...Latest news
