17 men arrested in California Sikh community shootings YUBA CITY, Calif. (AP) — Authorities in Northern California on Monday said they had arrested more than a dozen men from two warring criminal syndicates whose violent rivalry they say was responsible for a mass shooting at a Sikh temple and a brutal sword attack at a parade in 2018.Sutter County District Attorney Jennifer Dupré said the two syndicates were responsible for multiple shootings where 11 people were shot, including five people at a Sikh temple in Stockton last year and two more victims at a temple in Sacramento last month.None of the victims died. Dupré said all of the men arrested are part of California’s Sikh community and were members of one of two rival groups whose feud was fueled by intense personal connections.“This started out as one group, and one faction broke off, and since then they have been rivals trying to outdo each other. Mainly they show up places and try to shoot each other,” Dupré said, comparing it to the U.S. Civil War “where brothers were figh...

Golden Knights enter series vs. Jets with plenty to prove LAS VEGAS (AP) — Vegas heads into the NHL playoffs with home-ice advantage in the Western Conference, but the Golden Knights in many ways are flying under the radar. They are the third-most likely team to represent the West in the Stanley Cup Final, according to FanDuel Sportsbook, behind Colorado and Edmonton. The defending champion Avalanche went 10-1-1 down the stretch, and the Oilers — led by three 100-point scorers — ended the regular season on a nine-game winning streak. But the Knights also had an impressive final kick with a 5-0-3 record to set up the first-round series with the Winnipeg Jets. Game 1 is Tuesday night in Las Vegas.“We feel confident in our group, and I think we’ve had a chip on our shoulder the whole year,” Knights center Jack Eichel said. “It’ll be no different heading into playoffs.”Vegas had to be in playoff mode to end the regular season to fend off other challengers in the Pacific Division and in the conference, going all the way its final game...

Tenn. lawmakers’ race to adjourn complicates gun safety push NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee lawmakers on Monday kicked off a rushed effort to adjourn by the end of the week, looking for an exit from a session that has been eclipsed by the fallout of the Republican supermajority expelling two young Black Democrats and a growing push to pass some sort of gun restriction legislation.Just last week, Reps. Justin Jones and Justin Pearson returned to the GOP-dominated General Assembly after being ousted for their role in a pro-gun control demonstration from the House floor. While Republicans intended the move to be punitive, the result has instead thrust Tennessee as the new front in the battle for the future of American democracy, as well as maintained pressure on lawmakers to address gun control in a state known for its lax firearm regulations. Last month, six people were gunned down at a Nashville private school — a tragedy which kicked off a stream of calls for changes to Tennessee’s gun laws, including a ban on assault weapons, tougher back...

Kristian Winfield: Nets need to play Finney-Smith more playoff minutes PHILADELPHIA — The Nets need to find a way to play Dorian Finney-Smith more playoff minutes, and fast — even if it requires solving a math problem.Finney-Smith is one of the team’s most physical players, and his extended court presence is needed for a Nets team struggling with the 76ers’ physicality in their first-round playoff matchup against the Sixers. The issue? The Nets also need size to match up against superstar big man Joel Embiid. The biggest player on Brooklyn’s roster is reserve big man Day’Ron Sharpe.Vaughn says Finney-Smith and Sharpe are splitting the same minutes, a development since Finney-Smith plays both the four and small-ball five while Sharpe plays backup five exclusively.“You’ve got the full question of, ‘Do you play Day’Ron?’” head coach Jacque Vaughn said ahead of tipoff in Game 2 against the Sixers on Monday. “Day’Ron is supposedly one of our bigger dudes also.”Finney-Sm...
