Goldberg: In Gaza, piling horror upon horror, atrocities upon atrocities

Watching from afar as people race toward an abyss, I find it hard to know what to write except “no,” over and over. In the face of massacres that for Jews around the world brought back memories of genocide, the language of some Israeli leaders has, in turn, become murderous. On the cusp of a likely ground invasion of Gaza, many people I’ve spoken to, Jewish and Palestinian alike, are terrified that this rhetoric will become reality.Isaac Herzog, Israel’s president, said that the “entire nation” of Gaza was “responsible” for the attacks at a news conference on Friday, telling reporters, “It is not true, this rhetoric about civilians not being aware, not involved.” Herzog later clarified that civilians are not legitimate targets, but his words, coming from a member of Israel’s center-left Labor Party, were still chilling, suggesting a broad political consensus that Gazans are collectively to blame for the horror that befell Israel. “All gloves are off,” Ron Prosor, a distinguished Isr...

CNBC: aumentan las remesas a México, pero el “superpeso” reduce el poder adquisitivo

Published Mon, 03 Mar 2025 21:31:43 GMT

TURIN, Italy (AP) — In his first public words since being implicated in a betting scandal, Juventus midfielder Nicolò Fagioli has apologized for a “naïve error” but also hit out at newspapers for writing what he called was “rubbish.”The statement, across two Instagram stories posted on Wednesday, came the day after Fagioli was banned for seven months by the Italian soccer federation for betting violations, and ordered to undergo treatment for a gambling addiction.“I thought I would start by apologizing not only to Juventus fans but to all fans in the world of soccer and sport for the naive error that I made,” Fagioli wrote. “But instead I am obliged to start with the rubbish that newspapers write about me just to put me in a bad light with thousands of falsehoods…or maybe better, just to get a couple more views. I will speak soon.”His suspension was reduced from the minimum of three years after he admitted betting on soccer matches — but never those involving his team — and ca...

DENVER (KDVR) — There is no such thing as silly superstitions or taking your favorite sports team too seriously. Compared to a lot of other Americans, you are not taking your team seriously enough. A new study shows that a shocking number of sports fans would do anything for love -- that is for the love of the game. Remembering Broncos superfan and ‘Mile High Monster’ Kerry Green The Harris Poll, on behalf of Vivid Seats, conducted an online survey asking over 2,000 people, 18 years or older what makes someone a true sports fan.Fans would choose sports over loveForty-five percent of Americans said that a romantic relationship is more likely to last if both partners are fans of the same sports team. While less than half of the survey believes this would affect the relationship, the survey also showed that fans would go to seemingly extreme lengths to support their team. LONDON — Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has cooled on plans to travel to India later this month to strike a trade deal as intense negotiations continue and conflict erupts in the Middle East.On Wednesday, three British officials confirmed reporting in the Financial Times that hopes of striking a U.K.-India trade pact this month have faded. None were authorized to speak on the record so were granted anonymity.Sunak has “always said he’d get the right deal, not one driven by arbitrary deadlines,” said one of the government officials.Sunak had planned to attend the India vs. England game at the Cricket World Cup on October 29 in northern India with his counterpart Narendra Modi. But negotiations over tariffs, services, investment, inter-company work visas and rules of origin are still in play — and the proposed signing ceremony risked being overshadowed by events in Israel and Gaza.De-escalating the Middle East “is, and should be, the only game in town right now,” said an industry figure cl...

Kansas City Chiefs (5-1, No. 2 last week)Last week: Win vs. Broncos, 19-8Up next: vs. ChargersPatrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce remain the main attraction, but it’s worth noting how well the defense is playing. WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate is moving quickly to confirm Jacob Lew as ambassador to Israel, holding a hearing on his nomination Wednesday as President Joe Biden visits the region to reinforce U.S. support for Israel and try to ease tensions in its new war with Hamas. The Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing comes as the White House has told lawmakers that it is considering a request of between $90 billion and $100 billion for the wars in Israel and Ukraine and for Taiwan as it faces threats from China, according to four people familiar with the conversations. The request to Congress would cover a year, according to another person familiar with the Biden administration’s expected request. They were not authorized to publicly discuss the matter because the amount of the funding request is not final and they spoke on condition of anonymity.Lew, a treasury secretary under President Barack Obama, was nominated by Biden last month after Tom Nides left as ambassador in July.
