How researchers use mushrooms to break down cigarette butts

Editor’s Note: The video above shows KXAN News Today’s top headlines for April 10, 2023.AUSTRALIA (KXAN) -- Researchers in Australia are tackling a major, continent-wide issue: littered cigarette butts.According to the World Wildlife Fund Australia, half of the roughly 18 billion cigarettes smoked a year end up in a landfill.The company taking the lead, Fungi Solutions, uses fungi to divert waste from landfills and create natural alternatives to plastics. Cigarette butts will be broken down in an Australian-based trial by a familiar fungus: the oyster mushroom. In 2021, scientists began training the oyster mushroom to essentially eat these cigarette butts.The early success and now implementation of this trial will limit the amount of chemicals that will end up in Australia's waterways or limit the negative impacts these butts have on the ecosystem and wildlife. MALTA, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- On Sunday afternoon, the State Police of Saratoga arrested two individuals in the parking lot of Home2 Suites in Malta. Troopers initially responded to a report that the two refused to leave, but located them in a vehicle with drugs. Police observed a glass smoking device containing drug residue in the car and both individuals were found to possess multiple Controlled Substances. Erica T. Fredette, 31, of North Creek, was arrested and charged with Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Fifth Degree and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree. The other suspect, Philip M. Horowitz, 35, of Clifton Park, initially provided police with false identifying information. CLIFTON PARK, N.Y. (NEWS10) - New York State Police have arrested Quazey Robinson, 22, of Clifton Park after they say he forced his way into an apartment and assaulted several people inside. Troopers said the victims were known to Robinson and a child was inside the apartment, at the time. The child was not hurt. He was arrested by Niskayuna Police a short time later. LOUIS, Ill. - A Florissant foot doctor with a practice in East St. Louis, Illinois, appeared in federal court last week and pleaded guilty to health care fraud.Prosecutors with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Illinois said Howard Jackson, 69, admitted that from January 2016 to December 2020, he billed Medicare and Medicaid for procedures he never performed.Jackson told the court he regularly submitted claims to Medicare and Medicaid for nail avulsions, which is a procedure involving the partial or total removal of the toenail from the tip of the nail back to its base. Nail avulsions typically require the patient to be given anesthesia to avoid pain or discomfort.
