Chicago Bulls’ pattern of slow starts continues in a 105-92 loss in Milwaukee that locks in their postseason seeding

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 11:47:37 GMT

The opening minutes of Wednesday’s loss to the Milwaukee Bucks were an echo of an all-too-familiar pattern for the Chicago Bulls.Even without Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks put the Bulls on their heels within minutes, and the offense had no answers. DeMar DeRozan missed two shots at the start of a 3-for-12 night, Patrick Williams and Patrick Beverley clanked 3-pointers off the iron and Zach LaVine made only 1 of 6 attempts from long range.By the end of the first quarter, the Bulls had scored only 21 points as they shot a brutal 9-for-24 (37.5%) from the field. The 105-92 loss that followed the sluggish start locked in the Bulls as the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference, meaning they will travel to face the ninth seed — likely the Toronto Raptors — for a play-in tournament game next Wednesday. And with the stakes raised in a single-elimination game, the Bulls know they can’t repeat the same first-quarter weakness if they hope to stay alive in the postseason.&...

Celtics react to clinching No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs:

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 11:47:37 GMT

Malcolm Brogdon needed all of two words and a split second to share what clinching the No. 2 seed in the East meant to him Wednesday night.“That’s everything,” he said.Brogdon’s 29 points spurred the Celtics to their 97-93 win over the Raptors at TD Garden, which, in combination with the Bucks’ win over the Bulls, solidified Milwaukee and Boston as the top seeds in the East for the second straight season. This year, however, will be Brogdon’s first go-round in Boston, something he treasures. Brogdon believes he’s found exactly what he was hoping for after being traded to the Celtics last summer following a difficult two-year stint in Indiana.Jaylen Brown #7 of the Boston Celtics holds up the Red Auerbach Award he won before the NBA game against the Toronto Raptors at the TD Garden on Wednesday in Boston, MA. Malcolm Brogdon bolsters Sixth Man of the Year case as Celtics hold off Raptors, clinch No. 2 seed in East

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 11:47:37 GMT

When the Celtics dropped three consecutive games to the Warriors last June to lose the NBA Finals, it was clear they needed another playmaking guard and scoring punch off the bench to help them get over the hump.A few weeks later, Brad Stevens addressed it when he orchestrated a trade with the Pacers for Malcolm Brogdon in what was viewed as one of the best moves of the summer across the league. As the regular season winds down, that deal has proven to be worth the hype. Brogdon is the frontrunner to be named the NBA’s sixth man of the year and a significant reason why the Celtics are championship favorites when they begin their playoff pursuit next week.Wednesday was yet another big mark on Brogdon’s sixth man candidacy. With Jayson Tatum out as he continues to nurse a nagging hip injury and gets some extra rest before the playoffs and Jaylen Brown struggling through a tough shooting night, a shorthanded Celtics squad once again showed why they’re so much more than their two All-Sta...

North Korea warns ‘offensive action’ over allies’ drills

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 11:47:37 GMT

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea on Thursday threatened unspecified “offensive action” over the expansion of U.S. military exercises with rival South Korea as President Joe Biden’s special representative for North Korea flew to Seoul for talks with allies over the North’s growing nuclear threat. The North Korean comments came a day after the United States flew nuclear-capable B-52 bombers to the Korean Peninsula for joint aerial exercises with South Korean warplanes in their latest show of force against the North, which portrays the allies’ drills as invasion rehearsals. Animosity heightened in recent weeks as the pace of both the U.S.-South Korean military exercises and the North Korean weapons demonstrations increased in a cycle of tit-for-tat. The North’s official Korean Central News Agency said the United States and South Korea’s military exercises and the deployment of advanced U.S. military assets have turned the Korean Peninsula into a “huge powder magazine, which can be ...

The Islamic Waqf authorities, which manages the compound, said police fired stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds. The Israeli police said that “dozens of law-breaking juveniles” had fomented chaos, throwing rocks and other objects at officers and compelling police to act to restore “security, law and order.”More Palestini...

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The body of a U.S. man who had been missing since Feb. 11 has been found in a clandestine burial pit on Mexico’s Baja California peninsula, prosecutors in the state of Baja California Sur said Wednesday.State prosecutor Daniel de la Rosa said a local man and his sister had been arrested in connection with the killing, which he said apparently stemmed from a dispute over a traffic accident. The body of Wilmer Trivett was found by a specially trained dog near the quiet Pacific coast town of Todos Santos. Trivett had been camping in the area in his camper truck, which was found burned Feb. 23.Prosecutors said Trivett apparently was involved in a traffic accident with the two suspects some time ago. De la Rosa said Trivett paid the two about $2,500 for damages or injuries, but he alleged the pair decided it wasn’t enough and later abducted and killed him.The two suspects face homicide charges. Their full names were not given, in accordance with Mexican law.Prosecutors ...

More than one million customers without power as heavy storms hit Quebec, Ontario

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 11:47:37 GMT

More than one million customers in Quebec and Ontario were without power Wednesday after a messy mix of freezing rain and thunderstorms pummeled parts of both provinces.Quebec’s power utility said shortly after 10 p.m. that more than 970,000 of its 4.5 million customers had no power, with much of the province under a freezing rain warning. “What’s causing the outages is the mixture of precipitation and wind,” Hydro-Québec spokeswoman Gabrielle Leblanc said. “It weighs down the vegetation; there can be branches and trees that fall on the lines.”In western Quebec’s Outaouais region, near Ottawa, about 128,000 of the utility’s nearly 227,000 customers were without power. Environment Canada forecasted between 30 millimetres and 50 millimetres of rain in Gatineau, Que., the largest city in the region. In Montreal, more than 453,000 hydro customers had lost power, while another 200,000 people were dealing with outages in the Montérégie region, south of the ci...
